Ending the year well

As the year draws to a close, so do hundreds of goals, moments, relationships, and commitments we set out to complete. But rather than rushing straight into next year’s to-dos, there’s power in intentional reflection: understanding our values, realigning with what truly matters, and stepping into the new year with purpose not just plans.

This is more than a sentimental exercise. Scientific research shows that people who feel aligned with their values and purpose at work and in life tend to be more engaged, more resilient, and healthier both mentally and physically.

Let’s talk about why this matters, and more importantly how you can use it to shape a thriving 2026 year.

📌 Why Alignment & Purpose Matter

At its core, alignment means living in harmony with your deepest values, the principles that define how you want to live, not just how you have to live.

Purpose is the meaningful direction that guides daily actions, its the thread that connects your values to your choices, behaviour, and goals.

Research, including Gallup’s major workplace and wellbeing studies that shape workplaces across the world, show that purpose isn’t just motivational fluff: it has measurable effects on engagement, mental health, performance, and life satisfaction. All cruxial to living meanfiully and thriving at work and in life.

📊 What the Data Says

people like to belive in numbers so I am always tempted to speak from the heart but back it with numbers so that its not just my opinion but actual actionable data that can be used both individually and by organizations. Why both? Because we need to be fufilled in our personal lives but also at work. We spend to much time in our jobs to be unhappy in them. We need to build joy and purpose into them and yes, the simplist of jobs can drive purpose and conncetion. Better we can all contrbuite to that.

Think of it this way. The CEO can live a happy life and fulfilling life by making decsions that impact many. He can derive joy from both moneymaking and creating jobs in their community, but the ceaner in a care home can derive job satisfaction from creating an enviorment that is clean and inviting for the elderly in hi community. His smile can make a differnce to th person with dementia, who reconizes nothing else but that smile. Both are equally important.

Purpose drives engagement and resilience
People with a strong sense of purpose at work are 5.6x more likely to be engaged in their jobs, compared with those who lack purpose. Engaged workers feel connected, enthusiastic, and committed day-to-day. This is essencial to drive productivity, to ensure workers feel motivated to grow the business and also their lives. Gallup.com
Only about 18% of workers describe their job as work they believe is personally purposeful, and just 12% feel their job supports purpose outside work. There is a messaging failure when you cant create meanigful values driven workplaces. and this is something needed in all organizations no matter how big or how small. Gallup.com

Purpose protects against burnout and stress
In Gallup’s Power of Purpose research, those with high purpose reported much lower burnout, only about 13% said they were burned out very often or always, compared to 38% who lacked purposeGallup.com
Other analyses show that strong life purpose correlates with significantly reduced stress and burnout, acting as a buffer for emotional strain. Lab Manager

So purpose is central, supporting people to find their why and how they commit to it is a both a life and workplace essencial. Not only does it impact workplaces it affects peoples lives both mentally and pyhsically. This is a mission for HR, for wellbeing and for managers that impacts work and can impact sickness, employee health and more. Why we are not making this central to all workplaces is bafling to me.

Career wellbeing is foundational to overall wellbeing
According to Gallup, liking what you do every day (what they call career wellbeing) is one of the strongest predictors of thriving overall. People who enjoy their daily work are more than twice as likely to be thriving in life overall. Gallup.com

And this issomething we should be planning from a school. supporting our youth with their choices so its meets their purpose. Sadly we are not and the next statistic showcases this.

Engagement & wellbeing are declining overall
Globally, only ~21% of employees feel engaged at work and this has worsened recently. Wikipedia
In the U.S., and UK the percentage of workers thriving in life those with positive feelings has reached a record low, even as wellbeing conversations intensify. Gallup.com

So change is needed for real meanigful change.

🧠 What ThisReally Means for Life & Work

So what can we learn from these trends, both the challenges and the opportunities?

Intentional purpose fuels engagement & meaning

When your work reflects your values, you’re more engaged, less stressed, and more committed, not just to your job, but to your life. Purpose becomes a protective resource against burnout and exhaustion. Purpose is a reall catalyst for good wellbeing.

Alignment is a practice

Being aligned isn’t about perfection, it’s about ongoing reflection. Values can shift. Priorities evolve. Being intentional about alignment means asking yourself:

  • What matters most to me right now?
  • Where am I aligned and where am I not?
  • What small changes would create more meaningful connection between what I do and who I want to be?

Mental health & wellbeing are integral not optional

If you didnt see this already its once again arrived.

Employees and individuals alike increasingly want workplaces and lives that respect mental wellbeing. According to workplace wellbeing surveys:
• Nearly 92% of workers say it’s important to work for employers who value psychological wellbeing, and 95% want respect for clear work-life boundariesHIGH5 Strengths Test
• High stress and burnout, often linked to misalignment between work and personal values, are common unless intentional wellbeing strategies are in place. HIGH5 Strengths Test

This isn’t workplace data alone: it is life data.

✨ Turning Insight into Action: Year End Reflection

Here’s a simple, evidence-based framework you can use to close this year with clarity and welcome the next with intention:

🪞 Step 1: Reflect on Core Values

Ask yourself:

  • What values guided me this year?
  • Which ones felt honoured and which ones were neglected?
  • Where have I compromised what matters most?

Write them down. Seeing values in black and white brings clarity.

🎯 Step 2: Evaluate Alignment

For each key domain of your life (work, relationships, health, personal growth, spiritual life):

  • Does it reflect your values?
  • If not, what’s one step toward better alignment?

Small changes grounded in intention can and will build momentum.

📅 Step 3: Set Purpose-Driven Intentions

Rather than vague New Year’s resolutions, set purposeful intentions.
Examples:

  • “I will design my weeks so that my values of connection and creativity are honoured each day.”
  • “I will integrate wellbeing habits that support both work fulfillment and personal joy.”

❤️ Step 4: Create Meaningful Rituals

Purpose isn’t only grand goals, it’s daily habits:

  • Weekly reflection journaling
  • Biweekly mentoring or community conversation
  • Purpose check-ins with accountability partners.

So, as you look back on this year:

  • Celebrate what aligned
  • Learn from what didn’t
  • And step forward into a year defined not by busyness, but by meaningful purpose.
